He also re-reads the final verses of "Tenement Room, Chicago." Davis is asked for some thoughts on the human condition "in relation to what he writes about." He believes that the main problem confronting humanity is still racism and the refusal to accept people for what they actually are. He goes on to characterize racism as "almost an invention of the United States." Only with a "national acceptance of the contributions made by others" will the problem abate. Davis observes that when he was young,he thought that African-Americans had only 30 to 40 percent of their civil rights. After decades of struggle, "we have achieved only 80 percent of what we are due..and we must get to complete acceptance as human beings." |
