CBS News Senior Executive Producer Robert (Shad) Northshield describes the impact of the Civil Rights Movement on the evolution of TV newsgathering. Producers were looking for "something dramatic and graphic" and found it in the movement and Vietnam. "The Civil Rights Movement was coincidently good for us," says Northshield. In the Q&A that follows, he assesses the "significance" of events covered during this period. Julian Bond talks about his work as communications director for SNCC. He describes some of the preparation and training for students during Freedom Summer. He also talks about using photographs and audio tape to get the message to the news media. Both men talk about working with journalists and photographers like Richard Valeriani, Tom Brokaw, Frank McGee, Tom Wicker, Reese Cleghorn, Claude Sitton and Lawrence Pierce. Tapes 2B & 3 In the second session, folksingers Odetta (Odetta Holmes) and Guy Carawan of the Highlander Center talk about their involvement in the civil rights movement and the influences that gave birth to the songs of that era. Julian Bond also joins this discussion. He notes that the jailings led to a blending of styles.
