Photo created and curated for an exhibit by Blackside, Inc. for the series, "Eyes on the Prize."

Exhibit card reads: " 'Jim Crow' facilities in the South. By the early 1900s, 'Jim Crow' (derivation of the term has been subject to much speculation) described a far-reaching, institutional segregation that affected every aspect of American life. Schools, restaurants, trains and all forms of transportation, theaters, drinking fountains -- virtually all public and many private facilities practiced total separation of the races. The state of Florida went so far as to require 'Negro' and 'White' textbooks, and in South Carolina black and white cotton-mill workers were prohibited from looking out the same window."

Back of photo reads: "1954 #1"
